First steps
- Stop where it is safe and set the parking brake.
- Listen for air leaks and watch the air pressure gauges.
- Look for brakes that are out of adjustment, smoking or hot.
- If a wheel end is very hot, keep away from it and let it cool.
What to tell the provider
Which axle, what you noticed (pulling, grinding, smoke, low air), whether the truck can move safely, and your location.
Why it happens
Air brake problems on heavy trucks include slack adjusters out of adjustment, worn shoes or pads, cracked drums, leaking chambers and air system faults. Many brake jobs need a shop. Some can be done at the roadside.
