Mobile truck repair

A mobile truck repair service sends a technician to the truck. The service truck carries tools, an air compressor, common parts, and usually a welder. The work gets done on the shoulder, at a truck stop, in a customer's yard, or wherever the truck stopped.

When is mobile truck repair the right call?

Mobile repair makes sense when the truck can't move safely or when the fix is quicker in place than a tow. That covers most of what stops a truck on the road: air leaks, dead batteries, starters, alternators, belts and hoses, coolant leaks, fuel problems, brake chambers and slack adjusters, lights, glad hands, and a lot of derate situations.

It's the wrong call for anything that needs a bay. Engine internals, transmissions, aftertreatment rebuilds, and deep electrical diagnostics belong in a shop. A good mobile tech will tell you that on the phone rather than drive out and tell you in person.

What should you tell dispatch?

The faster you give this, the more accurate the ETA.

  • Exact location: highway, direction of travel, mile marker or exit, or a dropped pin. "I-80 westbound at the 112" beats "near Joliet."
  • Year, make, model, and engine of the truck.
  • What happened and what the dash is showing. Fault codes if you have them.
  • Whether the truck starts, whether it moves, and whether you're in a safe spot.
  • Loaded or empty.
  • Your callback number and, if the fleet is paying, the PO or authorization.

What does a mobile truck repair call cost?

Expect a service call fee that covers dispatch and travel, typically in the range of $150 to $350, plus labor at $125 to $225 an hour, plus parts. Nights, weekends, and holidays carry a premium. If you leave or get it running before the tech arrives, most services charge a dry-run fee. Ask for the fee structure before they roll.

What does 24/7 actually mean?

Most listings say 24/7. That usually means someone answers the phone. Ask two things: how long until a truck is on the way, and whether that's a technician or a callback. A real ETA from a dispatcher who knows where the tech is beats a promise.
