Truck Fuel Delivery: What to Do and Who to Call
The All Roadside Assistance answer: If the truck ran out of diesel, call a road service company that delivers fuel. Ask whether they can also prime the fuel system, since many diesel engines need it after running dry.
First steps
- Get off the road as far as you can and turn on the hazard lights.
- Do not keep cranking the engine. It can drain the batteries.
- Know how much fuel you need to reach the next stop.
- Ask whether the provider brings diesel, DEF or both.
Why it happens
Running a diesel engine dry can pull air into the fuel system, and the engine may need to be primed before it will run. Some road service companies deliver fuel, and many towing companies offer it as part of road service. Ask on the phone.
What to tell the provider
Diesel or gasoline, how much fuel you need, whether you also need DEF, and your location and direction of travel.
How we pick the providers
All Roadside Assistance is a directory. We do not dispatch trucks or take a share of any job. On each town page we list providers whose listing data matches this problem, closest first, within 30 miles of the town center, or 50 miles when fewer than 3 are closer. You call the business directly. Confirm availability, capability and price on the phone.
