Truck Brake Repair: What to Do and Who to Call

The All Roadside Assistance answer: Do not drive on brakes you do not trust. Call a truck repair shop or a mobile mechanic that does brake work, and ask whether they can adjust or replace parts at the truck.

First steps

  1. Stop where it is safe and set the parking brake.
  2. Listen for air leaks and watch the air pressure gauges.
  3. Look for brakes that are out of adjustment, smoking or hot.
  4. If a wheel end is very hot, keep away from it and let it cool.

Why it happens

Air brake problems on heavy trucks include slack adjusters out of adjustment, worn shoes or pads, cracked drums, leaking chambers and air system faults. Many brake jobs need a shop. Some can be done at the roadside.

What to tell the provider

Which axle, what you noticed (pulling, grinding, smoke, low air), whether the truck can move safely, and your location.

How we pick the providers

All Roadside Assistance is a directory. We do not dispatch trucks or take a share of any job. On each town page we list providers whose listing data matches this problem, closest first, within 30 miles of the town center, or 50 miles when fewer than 3 are closer. You call the business directly. Confirm availability, capability and price on the phone.
